“I Could Do That Too”

Today Kyle brought a new hat to class and everyone loved it. Except for Samantha.
I Could Do That Too is a 16-page picture book I wrote and illustrated in watercolor and gouache as a final assignment for my Picture Book Illustration class at Emily Carr.
Alice in Wonderland

The Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts and Alice’s encounter with the White Rabbit.
I created these illustrations for an assignment in my Picture Book Illustration class at Emily Carr. We had to design and illustrate the Cheshire Cat as well as two other moments of our choice from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland using gouache and at least two other media.
I used acrylic gouache, watercolor, pencil crayon and collage. The chapters in the book have very different moods and atmospheres so I wanted to create very distinct images through textures and color palettes while still maintaining a cohesive aesthetic.
Character Lineup: The Odyssey

left to right: Polyphemus the cyclops, Odysseus, Penelope, Circe with pig, Siren
My final assignment for my Character Concept Art class at Emily Carr was to create a lineup of 3-5 characters from a fairy tale or mythology, design an environment and assets for one of the characters and, finally, write and illustrate a one page comic featuring that chacater in action.
I chose The Odyssey and tried to include the most memorable and diverse characters. I find the story to be pretty wild and psychedelic so I wanted to create a colorful universe and drew some inspiration from the cult 1973 anime Belladonna of Sadness.

I focussed on Polyphemus the cyclops for the comic. There is not much written about him, but in researching him I found him to be sort of a blueprint for a specific type of contemporary characters: a self-centered spoiled brat with a powerful father (literally Poseidon) who is over-confident in his musical abilities and can’t comprehend that a woman might not return his romantic feelings. I also liked the juxtaposition of the violent, brutal nature of the character with the idyllic, pastoral sheep grazing fields where he spends most of his time.
Character Concept: Rocky Raccoon

For my Character Concept Art class at Emily Carr, I had to design and illustrate a character from a song, then design an environment for the character and model it in Maya.
I chose the title character from The Beatles’ song Rocky Raccoon. For the design I drew inspiration fron Heinz Edelmann, the iconic illustrator who was the art director for the Yellow Submarine movie.
